The Pillar 2 Director will work in the Office of Medical Student Education providing direction, guidance and oversight for the clinical training year (Pillar 2) and the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships; collaborating with regional campuses, Frontier and Rural Medicine (FARM) sites, and clerkship directors.
While leading the primary clinical phase of the curriculum, this position will also lead and develop needed didactics provided to SSOM students during the longitudinal integrated clerkship to meet the educational objectives of the school and develop assessments to ensure that all competencies are met. This position will represent the institution and its innovative curriculum at the national level.
Expectations:

  • žDevelop, implement, and oversee the longitudinal integrated clerkships (LIC) and curriculum, assuring objectives are met (competencies and individual objectives).
  • Coordinate curriculum content by maintaining the LIC student and faculty handbook, organizing student orientation, meeting with clerkship directors regularly to create and annually revise core discipline/department didactics and direct the Vital Instruction through Academic Lectures And Seminars (VITALS) course.
  • Document medical student performance using standardized student and faculty evaluation methods, working with the Department of Assessment to ensure timely and accurate reporting of student grades. ž
  • Correspond with students and faculty mentors regarding schedules and expectations.
  • Assure program comparability across campuses by ensuring comparable curricular opportunities across campuses, chairing best practices meetings to compare data, and working with campus leaders to ensure comparability.
  • Conduct periodic program evaluation, develop research questions and study methodology, publish education research and present at regional and national medical education meetings.
  • Provide periodic Pillar phase review and other LCME related documentation to the Associate Dean of Medical Student Education and/or the Medical Education Committee.
  • Serve on appropriate academic committees, e.g. LIC advisor committee meetings.


Qualifications:

  • M.D./D.O. with current SD Licensure or ability to obtain one and appropriate certification for field of specialty.
  • Leadership experience in a medical school or similar environment.
  • Experience in student services in an academic environment is preferable.

This position reports to Dr. Amy Prunuske, PhD, Associate Dean of Medical Student Education.
