About the Route

Central Route is the Heart of Britain's Railway. More than a million people rely on our route every week, and we help transport nearly a million tonnes of freight every month. But we are more than just tracks and trains, we are a catalyst for jobs and opportunities, a connection to leisure and time with family and friends, and a foundation for communities and neighbourhoods.

We are a key part of the national network, with Birmingham New Street - the busiest station outside of London and the hub of the railway - connecting England, Scotland and Wales, with hundreds of services arriving and leaving every day.

About the role

About the role This role offers the chance to be at the forefront of keeping the railway and surrounding communities safe, working in close partnership with the British Transport Police to make a real difference every day. You'll take part in proactive patrols, helping to prevent incidents before they happen and playing a key role in protecting vulnerable areas across the network.

When situations arise, you'll be ready to step in and take action. You'll respond to incidents affecting the safe operation of the railway, bringing calm, clarity, and confidence when it matters most. Where appropriate, you'll step into the role of Rail Incident Officer, taking the lead in establishing control, coordinating teams, and ensuring services are restored safely and efficiently.

You'll play an important part in shaping a safer railway for the future. By gathering key information and evidence following incidents, you'll support investigations and help identify improvements. Working alongside the BTP, you'll contribute to structured debriefs and intelligence gathering, helping to strengthen infrastructure and better protect high-risk locations.

Strong communication and teamwork will be at the heart of your success. You'll work closely with Network Rail and BTP control teams, ensuring everyone stays informed and aligned during both routine activity and high-pressure situations. Out on the network, you'll represent Network Rail with professionalism and pride, building positive relationships with lineside neighbours and third parties.

You'll also take ownership of your operational readiness, ensuring that all response equipment is well maintained, correctly stored, and ready to be used at a moment's notice. During incidents, you'll support drivers with clear, timely information to help maintain safety and awareness on the ground.

On Central Route, we like to take that one extra step towards being prepared for anything. Our Mobile Incident Officers hold a selection of additional skills and competencies that enhance our preparedness including HGV Driving, Generators, Lighting, Pumps, Hiab Crane, Drones and more.

Our Emergency Intervention Unit (and wider equipment inventory) is a nationally deployable asset and whilst an unlikely event, you should be prepared for short notice National deployment as part of this role. You can expect to visit all corners of the Central route during your day to day duties.

This is a role for someone who enjoys being proactive, thrives in a fast-moving environment, and is motivated by working in partnership to make a tangible difference - keeping people safe, protecting the railway, and improving the network every day.
